Australia Tour 2023

Our Tour Group
So in preparation for an exhausting flight to the other side of the world. We decided to travel up to Heathrow Airport on November 5th the day before our 9.10am flight with Singapore Airlines to Melbourne via Singapore. Travelling up with Bournemouth Airport cars at 2pm we stayed at the Staybridge suites a IHG hotel. Situated next door to the holiday Inn. Our hotel shared the restaurant and bar at the Holiday Inn. The suites are luxurious as a 4 star should be. A great place to rest before a long haul flight.
Day 2 and 3 (The journey out)
Starting of early with an alarm call at 4.45am we set of to Heathrow around 6am. Took a glance at the breakfast offering. Which I have to say looked really good . Usual hot choice Bacon eggs sausages beans etc. Plenty of fruit cakes and cereals. Washed down with tea coffee etc. Didn’t stop though got a Bolt cab to the airport terminal 2 cost £12.30 took around 12 minutes. Checked baggage and security was a doddle at this time of the morning. Got into the airport lounge by 6.35am. Plane boarding was smooth and away on time just over 12 hours to Singapore with Singapore Airlines. Service is fantastic from the very friendly cabin crew. Switchover at Singapore Airport was smooth and painless. Even had time for a Tiger beer (nice and cold pint). A further 7 hours took us to Melbourne Airport. Chaos ensued as Australia need as well as visas a declaration landing card and a smart pass. The queues were long and very slow. Eventually through we were picked up by our transfer company Be Smart. A half hour journey and we were at our hotel. Citadenes on Bourke. A 4 star hotel of suites. Directly opposite our hotel were bars and restaurants so a quickish drink and a visit to the 7.11 before some must needed sleep. There’s a 11 hour time difference to the UK.
Day 4
An early rise 6am still feeling jaded from our journey. A great breakfast followed by a 4 hour sightseeing tour of Melbourne a taster to what we can see. Followed by a 11 hour tour to the moon light sanctuary and the penguin parade. High light for Me was getting up close to Kangaroos and Wallabies feeding them from our hands something really special and unique. Kim had a very close encounter with a cuddle from a koala bear called Victor who was 7 years old and loved his eucalyptus. https://youtube.com/shorts/Y21MYHmg8Ho?feature=shared .During our visit we encountered a thunder and lightning storm with heavy rain this can be heard in the video!. What a way to finish our tour but to observe 1600 penguins waddle up from the sea to there burrows. A ritual that can be observed every night around dusk. So for us around 8.20pm the parade of penguins took place. Arriving back in Melbourne around 11.30. We had completed our first day in Australia.
Day 5

An early start for Kim who took the great ocean road tour to see the sights including the 12 apostles. Myself I decided to explore Melbourne by foot and Tram. I wanted to tour the MCG but unfortunately was unable to as it was closed for an expo (Totally gutted). Instead I took the old tram 35 which circles the CBD area this is free and includes a commentary which for the tourists tells you about the many areas and the buildings it passes. All trams in the CBD are free to promote public transport. This is a great way to get around the city.

Melbourne marina

Melbourne CBDMy favourite area in Melbourne was the Docklands area with its shopping mall and the Docks itself with its high rise structures towering adjacent to the water. Littered with Bars restaurants and shops this a great place to spend the afternoon. From fish and chip booths to high end restaurants there’s something for everyone. During the evening we stayed local to our hotel on bourke. Visiting Clara bar and the Elephant and Wheelbarrow.

Funky Beermat

The later had a singer who was very good. Check out my YouTube videos @Kevinbrook8759 .  https://youtu.be/BZ_CATBoxWQ?feature=shared

Day 6

Another early start after breakfast we set of to Alice Springs by air from Melbourne. Flying Quantus a smooth 2 hour 30 minutes flight.

God its Hot 38!

Arriving at Alice Springs the temperature in the outback was 38°. We visited the Flying Doctor service . The Outback School of the air and the original Telegraph centre. All very interesting and informative.

In the evening we had a rodeo bbq evening with excellent steaks scrumptious salads and copious amounts of wine and beer. We were entertained by the locals who chatted about life on the ranch over the years. And enjoyed a sing song around the camp fire. We were showed how to make bread laced with rum. We’ll yummy when we tried it. What another great day but a tiring one. Bed by 9.30pm.

Day 7
Another early start 6am breakfast in the Mecure Hotel Alice Springs followed by a 6 hour coach trip to Uluru. A chance to see the Outback! This coach trip didn’t seem as long as it actually was. Learning about the trees that spontaneously catch fire to ensure survival, to the huge lorries with numerous trailers and everything in between. Glen our coach driver kept us amused with facts quizzes music and silly games. A fantastic experience coupled with a few stops at the various vantage points and roadside service stops. We even got to feed emus.

Arriving in Uluru before sunset we had a tour of Ayres rock and a picnic with sparkling wine to view the rock in all its splendour as the sun set. We probably didn’t get the best experience as the clouds had set in first. But a picturesque scene none the less. A drive back to our hotel and a few pints sealed a wonderful day.

Day 8
Another early start as we headed back to the rock where we got up close. Observing the rock and its incredible aboriginal paintings. Our guide kept us well informed about the aboriginal customs and history of the area. This included how the aboriginal women still go to give birth in the same places their ancient ancestors did.

Our brief but fun time in the outback was over. We then headed to the local airport for our 3 flights to Cairns. Yes 3 . Sydney Brisbane Cairns. Arriving at around 9pm. It had been a long day for sure.

Day 9

Cairns and the Great barrier reef. A scorching hot day and yet another early start saw us travelling by foot after breakfast to the marina where we picked up a large catamaran to the great barrier reef. A purpose built pontoon the size of about 3 football pitches awaited us. Water sports, snorkelling, swimming etc. A glass bottom boat, a submersible and a helicopter ride were on offer. We had lunch on the catamaran and enjoyed a relaxing and again informative day out in the ocean. Yet again a hot one! The trip to and from the reef was a tad choppy to say the least. Alot of the people on board required the use of the sick bags. Yuck.

On our way to the Great Barrier reef.

Day 10

We had booked a trip to the rainforest with a exciting cable car suspended over the forests curtain. 2 stops n route we learnt from the forest guides about the wildlife in the rainforest including a tree kangaroo! This trip is a must in Cairns. Deep into the forest is a small town called Kuranda This town relies heavily on tourists from the Sky train and the impressive railway which we used to return to Cairns. The railway is one of the most impressive for views I have ever been on. Its definitely got the wow factor.

Day 11

Another early start and a flight this time with Virgin Australia to Sydney. At least the weather was still lovely in Sydney. Unfortunately though our hotel was undergoing renovations so no lounge bar or restaurant. As it was all sheeted of. We were not best pleased. The room was large and spacious and had obviously just been renovated too. We decided to venture out to the harbour which at first glance was impressive and very vibrant. We had an absolutely fantastic meal in a New Orleans style restaurant on the harbour side.

Day 12/13

After a breakfast in a nearby coffee shop restaurant as ours was shut as explained. We all met up for a tour of Sydney including the impressive Opera House where we were treated to a guided tour inside which included listening to some of the artists performing their repertoire. We also went on a cruise around the harbour which gave us the opportunity to take some fantastic memorable pictures. Our trip with a fantastic group of people was concluded with a lovely meal on our last night.

A great sunny day outside the Opera House.

While in Sydney we managed to squeeze in trips to Manly by ferry. A lovely stunning beach resort. A bus trip to Bondi Beach followed and a lot of walking in-between. Sydney is a large stunning metropolis and takes a few days to see it all.

On the weekend before our next adventure we took a train out of Sydney to Coledale. A small seaside village along the coast. This is where my wife’s mum lived and schooled whilst living in Australia in the 1940s. Just after world war 2 her father had been loaned to the Australian military and stationed near by. After finding her mum Anitas old school and stopping of at the local social club for refreshments and some local entertainment, we decided to walk a section of the coastal road taking in some breath taking scenery before catching the train back to Sydney. Check out the video. https://youtu.be/Rxn2kDR-xqc?feature=shared  taken at the Coledale social club (Here comes the Sun)
In summary wow what a fortnight. Really hard to put into context the whole experience just wow. Australia we will be back some day soon.
